Uncharted Waters | Lockdown 2020 | Look on the bright side!

Curfew will be imposed for a day or two was what we all heard initially and never in our wildest dreams thought that days would turn into weeks and weeks into months! These are unprecedented times and we have no choice but to face the reality of how things are. There are moments we think about the good times we had during pre-COVID-19 and start grumbling about the predicament we are in and guess what? That is fine!

I would like to shed light on a few things that I am going through which probably you can relate to reasonably well.

Under house arrest

This is probably what someone who is under house arrest feels like. We aren’t allowed to step out of the house (being very cynical here), we can’t go on our regular drives, we can’t go partying, we can’t eat out, we can’t go shopping and yes- the list goes on!

Implications

More time to think means for some of us – more time to OVERTHINK (myself included). This is something we should be mindful of as we may tend to “make a mountain out of a molehill” which may lead to negativity, severing relationships and a general restlessness looming over us.

As I write this blog post, even I am overthinking something that is irritating me and I am trying so hard to get my mind off it. However, I am hopeful that this problem will be overcome (wish me luck!).

Mood Fix

Put simply, what I am trying to say is that we can always find a way to stay away from negativity and use that energy to do something productive, something positive, something that may have a lasting impact on another.

You are not alone in this. We are all fighting battles, and some of us are too proud to admit that we have problems (hint – me). Now is the time that I am reminded of the song “Lean on me” and who is that person you can lean on?

Life is not so bad!

Come on let’s go and do something!  Start with being grateful. Someone out there is dreaming of the life you are living although you on the other hand dream of the life someone else is living. So stop focusing on what you don't have and focus on what you have!

The daily commute

Just imagine how much time you are saving by not having to travel to work every single day and not to mention the fatigue that traveling in our traffic-filled roads can bring! Also, don't forget the joy it brings Mother Nature to have almost pollution-free air to breathe!

Sleep

Are you guilty of waking up an hour later than usual? Well, if not for Covid-19 and the subsequent lockdown it brought upon us, would you have been able to do that for weeks on end? Ah, now you’re smiling 😏 Enjoy it, give your body that rest it has been craving for so long!

Family time

Most of us get to spend so much time with our loved ones at home now. Some of us would be loving this and some of us with mischievous little ones may be contemplating what to make of this section (haha). All in all, we need to make the best of this time..

Fitness

No gym? No problem. There are so many ways you can keep fit and healthy at home. Search for some home workouts on the web and start burning ‘em calories! Remember, you can always make your friends go "Woah" when they finally see you after lockdown (wink wink).

Bank Balance

Needless to say, we are saving quite a bit on restaurant food, travel, and impulsive buying habits we usually engaged in. This truly has added up to a quite sizeable saving, hasn't it? 🙋

Working From Home

All of us would have had to get familiar with the concept of WFH eventually as we head into a highly connected and digitized future. So HR does not have to teach you anything in particular on how to carry your work from home because you’ve already learned that on the job!

Congratulations!👏

What else can you be happy about now? Think of at least another five while you’re at it and take the first step towards a happier time during lockdown!

A looming energy crisis or one step closer to sustainability?

The impact would be devastating if we don’t prepare for what I am going to tell you about. This is just a thought that came to my mind while I was peering out of my window one hot sunny morning during lockdown (29 th of April 2020 to be precise). I was procrastinating every time my mind told me that I should put my phone and laptop to charge and it so happened that we lost the electricity supply for a short time. My mind was full of regrets now. Thankfully though, the electricity came back within minutes. Putting this into perspective The household energy and water consumption levels are probably at extremely high levels with all family members forced to stay home due to Covid-19. You cannot deny the fact that the majority of us rely on our electronic devices such as our “can’t do without mobile phones”, laptops, TVs, fans, air conditioning (If we are lucky), Wi-Fi routers, etc. etc. I am not going to ask you whether you can afford to do without any one of the

Fashion Designer Minnelli Abayaratna on The Importance of Supporting Local Brands

As a fashion designer, I strongly believe we have to be aware of the story behind products and the people who are involved in the process of its production . Having been involved in the fashion industry for a number of years, I’ve gathered experience in a start-up and a few of the more recognised labels in Sri Lanka . Since we are now facing a pandemic on a scale that we haven’t seen the likes of for more than a century I thought it was important for me to talk about the importance of supporting local brands. I want to share the story behind my favourite type of fabric to work with. It is that of the handloom textile. The history behind traditional handloom weaving in Sri Lanka dates back to the times of the Indian Prince Vijaya and quite possibly before that. It is said that upon his arrival on the island in 543 BC, he witnessed a woman called Kuveni from the indigenous race “Yaksha Gothra” spinning yarn - she would go on to be his wife. The local handloom industry acquir

Expressing Yourself With Your Car | Part 1 | Easy

Whether you drive a Maruti or the most expensive car in the World, there's a way you can create a character of its own to reflect your tastes, preferences and attitude. When this is done, there's no longer a "Maruti" or a "most expensive car in the World", but rather a "one-of-a-kind ride" which is truly yours and can be differentiated from the rest! In this article I will give you some tips on how you can enhance the apperance of your vehicle while being on a budget! Expressing Yourself We all crave to be different, to express ourselves, to be unique etc. Some do this by way of fashion, singing, gymming, sports and many other ways, but some do it using their cars. I really find it fascinating as to how creative people can get and how they could transform the look of an average car into something so special and unique. Once Upon A Time Since 2003 (when the 9 year old me started to realize that car modifications aren't limited to PC games such a
