Fitness is not what you think it is!

By popular demand, I decided that I need to put out an article related to fitness. So I caught up with one of my buddies I met in School almost a decade ago — Mushahid Munshif. He’s been so passionate about fitness over the past 10 years and has come a long way since the beginning of his fitness journey. His dedication and consistency towards what he was doing impressed me and I am sure it impressed everyone around him too. So I could not think of anyone better to collaborate with on this one! A Fresh New perspective Even  I  was mind-blown when he told me that, “Fitness is not just aesthetics, it’s much more than that. It’s about your physical and emotional well-being.” Come to think of it, this concept really makes sense. What’s the use of being the most physically fit, but not so good on the emotional side. What kind of impact would it have if you give your mental health an equal amount of attention too? This was truly an eye-opener. However, another important point broug...

Growing your own veggies, spices, greens & fruits

Bright-coloured spices & fruits among lush veggies and greens. Now isn’t that a lovely sight! It truly fascinates me how a fully-grown plant starts off as a tiny seedling and then goes onto produce food for us for months on end. I took up planting back in January 2016 and I started off with one of the easiest plants to grow from seeds – chili. I had three pots into which I sprinkled some seeds and three months later I had my own chilis fresh off the tree. Fresh & Yours There’s no better feeling than to harvest your own food. Knowing that you have not used any pesticides or chemicals on them makes you feel even better. Just like us humans, plants need love and attention. You need to water them sufficiently. Once in the morning and once in the evening is more than enough during bright sunny days. All you need is some space. If you don’t have a big garden, that’s okay. Start small. Get some flower pots or better yet recycle some plastic containers and convert ...

Expressing yourself through Watches | Part 2 | Insights from Watch Enthusiasts

Now, since I promised you a part 2 way more interesting than part 1 . I got an additional contributor to this article- Geshan Wimaladharma. He is attached to one of the leading watch stores in Srilanka; Wimaladarma & Sons .The interesting part about this is that I got to know him due to my weekly visits to one of the stores so I could enjoy glancing through new arrivals. I have bought multiple watches from this store and restored my late grandfather’s watch too.  Here are more insights especially for you! Impress yourself An interesting insight Geshan shared with me was that he’d select a watch not by looking at the brand, but by how unique it is in its styling . Now for those of you who think, “bigger the brand, the better it is”, if you personally don’t like how the watch looks or the general designs offered by the brand you deem “the best”, then we suggest that it is not the watch you should buy. Remember that you need to f eel satisfied with your purch...

Investing in the Colombo Stock Exchange | Basics

Ever wanted to get into the stock market, but could not go that extra step? Then you’re in luck because I will break it down into manageable bits in this article! 😊 Kindly note that this is set in a Sri Lankan context and this article will focus on investing in the Colombo Stock Exchange ( CSE ). Becoming an Investor First of all, you need to get in touch with a stockbroker company such as Asha Phillip Securities Ltd (which has been my stockbroker for ages now) or any other reputed stockbroker in the country.  Once you’ve done that, they will create a CDS (Central Depository System) account for you. So basically, you need to deposit money into this account if you want to make any purchases of stocks. Once the money is in, all you have to do is call up your agent (a stockbroker assigned to you) and tell him or her which company’s stocks you want to buy at what price and how much. You will then get a statement of your stock portfolio every month and you can also dow...

How to get over the Fear of Public Speaking | Part 1

Are you crazy?? I can’t do that!  is probably what you say when someone asks you to speak in front of an audience. I don’t know about you, but that’s exactly how I felt when the Warden handed me the Bible when I was walking into Chapel on my very first day of College. I was fifteen (2011) and moved from my previous school to the new one in order to complete 3 years of “Advanced Level” education. The Warden who was a Christian priest I had known for a while was quite the jovial type too. He was also known as, "Father Dushy" (Dush - ee) Grab The Opportunity I immediately said to him, “Father, I can’t, I don’t even know the reading”. In response, he gestured to me that it’s no big deal. Now just minutes away from my turn at the lectern in front of hundreds of students to read the scripture, I was nervous as ever. However, I thought to myself that I should give it a try anyway! Take That First Step My main worry was that I will mispronounce something and that I wo...

Driving Into A Sustainable Future | Luxury Performance SUVs Are Here To Stay!

Source;Landrover.com/news What if I told you that luxury, refinement, power, performance, and presence could be combined into a   sustainable product? A product that goes “Above and Beyond” and challenges stereotypes. We as humans make choices every single day, 24/7, 365 days of the year, but how many of them are “Sustainable”? The Bigger Picture If I told you that I made a conscious effort to promote sustainable lifestyles and this affected the thinking patterns of 1000 people who saved 1 liter of water a day? This leads to a saving of 365,000 liters of water a year . Imagine, a million people doing this. I will allow you to do the math. This is the bigger picture I am trying to create awareness around and focus people’s attention on. The Choice Is Yours This article focuses on one of the occasional, but key decisions we make which can get us one step closer to saving the world from air pollution and depleting reserves of Oil through sustainable lifestyle choices...

Attorney-at-Law & Business Analyst On Expressing Yourself Through Watches | Part 1

One of the most important accessories to consider when expressing yourself in a fashionable way can be your friend who tells you the time – your wristwatch! Since I befriended Manendra back in 2007 we noticed that why we clicked so well was that we had a common interest in most things. To say the least, we were mad over watches! Our taste has matured over time and seek more than “Just a watch” to wear. While most people just look for “anything that tells you the time”, we take it to the next level; what we both are looking for is a masterpiece that speaks to us from the design, colour, and detail of the dial to the material used on the strap and the origins of the watchmaker. This process is more like buying a car for some (not how much money you spend, but how much time you spend researching) Individuality Matters! When we choose a watch we choose it based on a few characteristics that speak to us. Individuality is important. For example, my friend likes a thick ring ar...

Fashion Designer Minnelli Abayaratna on The Importance of Supporting Local Brands

As a fashion designer, I strongly believe we have to be aware of the story behind products and the people who are involved in the process of its production . Having been involved in the fashion industry for a number of years, I’ve gathered experience in a start-up and a few of the more recognised labels in Sri Lanka . Since we are now facing a pandemic on a scale that we haven’t seen the likes of for more than a century I thought it was important for me to talk about the importance of supporting local brands. I want to share the story behind my favourite type of fabric to work with. It is that of the handloom textile. The history behind traditional handloom weaving in Sri Lanka dates back to the times of the Indian Prince Vijaya and quite possibly before that. It is said that upon his arrival on the island in 543 BC, he witnessed a woman called Kuveni from the indigenous race “Yaksha Gothra” spinning yarn - she would go on to be his wife. The local handloom industry acquir...
