Attorney-at-Law Manendra Madena on Why it pays to be well-dressed

I caught up with one of my best buddies who I personally consult with when I'm in need of fashion advise so that he could give YOU some tips on why It’s important for you to take good grooming practices and your outfits seriously.

First Impressions count

Being well-dressed can convey positive signals to others around you, regardless of what kind of occasion it is. Be it a wedding, conference, meeting, or even an interview, you need to show respect towards the people around you. One way of doing this is by being well-groomed and well dressed. These non-verbal cues are as important as the finesse you want to display in your knowledge about things and how you speak. Remember to complement your personality with what you wear and how you choose to wear it!

Confidence

Something even I personally have experienced is that when you are well-dressed or wear what you really like, there is this sense of confidence that you notice within. This form of confidence will only add to your chances of excelling in whatever you want to get done. Be it a presentation, an interview, a networking forum, or just about anything you are working on.

Quality over anything else

Focus on obtaining clothing of high quality. Remember, high quality does not mean highest price! You could find some reasonably priced clothing and accessories that would fit almost all occasions at reasonable prices from leading fashion stores or better yet, get your custom made  outfits through your favorite Tailor!

Looking Sharp

As a general practice, Manendra suggests you invest  in a good suit, shoes, and belts (black and brown), Jeans, ties and some formal blue and white shirts. This will form the foundation of your consciously crafted dress sense that could impress quite a few people!

Express yourself

Being well-dressed is a good way to express yourself too. Choose colours and clothing to match your preference. Feel comfortable and walk with confidence!

Accessories

One of the most notable accessories available for gents are watches. Both of us love these tiny masterpieces and would spend hours glancing through collections of different brands. Again, you don’t have to spend a fortune to get yourself a good watch. There are so many brands of watches priced reasonably which are durable and look really good.

Investment

Dressing well is an outcome of a good investment in yourself. So be sure to take some time to ponder upon these thoughts and remember, formal or casual – being well-dressed and well-groomed will surely take you places!

Fashion Designer Minnelli Abayaratna on The Importance of Supporting Local Brands

As a fashion designer, I strongly believe we have to be aware of the story behind products and the people who are involved in the process of its production . Having been involved in the fashion industry for a number of years, I’ve gathered experience in a start-up and a few of the more recognised labels in Sri Lanka . Since we are now facing a pandemic on a scale that we haven’t seen the likes of for more than a century I thought it was important for me to talk about the importance of supporting local brands. I want to share the story behind my favourite type of fabric to work with. It is that of the handloom textile. The history behind traditional handloom weaving in Sri Lanka dates back to the times of the Indian Prince Vijaya and quite possibly before that. It is said that upon his arrival on the island in 543 BC, he witnessed a woman called Kuveni from the indigenous race “Yaksha Gothra” spinning yarn - she would go on to be his wife. The local handloom industry acquir

A looming energy crisis or one step closer to sustainability?

The impact would be devastating if we don’t prepare for what I am going to tell you about. This is just a thought that came to my mind while I was peering out of my window one hot sunny morning during lockdown (29 th of April 2020 to be precise). I was procrastinating every time my mind told me that I should put my phone and laptop to charge and it so happened that we lost the electricity supply for a short time. My mind was full of regrets now. Thankfully though, the electricity came back within minutes. Putting this into perspective The household energy and water consumption levels are probably at extremely high levels with all family members forced to stay home due to Covid-19. You cannot deny the fact that the majority of us rely on our electronic devices such as our “can’t do without mobile phones”, laptops, TVs, fans, air conditioning (If we are lucky), Wi-Fi routers, etc. etc. I am not going to ask you whether you can afford to do without any one of the

Attorney-at-Law & Business Analyst On Expressing Yourself Through Watches | Part 1

One of the most important accessories to consider when expressing yourself in a fashionable way can be your friend who tells you the time – your wristwatch! Since I befriended Manendra back in 2007 we noticed that why we clicked so well was that we had a common interest in most things. To say the least, we were mad over watches! Our taste has matured over time and seek more than “Just a watch” to wear. While most people just look for “anything that tells you the time”, we take it to the next level; what we both are looking for is a masterpiece that speaks to us from the design, colour, and detail of the dial to the material used on the strap and the origins of the watchmaker. This process is more like buying a car for some (not how much money you spend, but how much time you spend researching) Individuality Matters! When we choose a watch we choose it based on a few characteristics that speak to us. Individuality is important. For example, my friend likes a thick ring ar
